The ninth edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup was held between March 13 and April 28 in 2007. A total of 16 teams, the most number of participants at a World Cup, played across eight venues in the West Indies, with Australia beating Sri Lanka by 53 runs in a rain-affected final at the Kensington Oval at Bridgetown in Barbados to successfully defend the crown it had won in both previous editions. The match is remembered for Adam Gilchrist's spectacular century, a 104-ball 149, in which he smashed 13 fours and 8 sixes, giving Australia a hat-trick of wins on the trot and its fourth World Cup trophy overall.
Among the memorable moments the tournament provided, Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes in an over for South Africa against the Netherlands and Lasith Malinga claiming four wickets in four balls for Sri Lanka against South Africa.
