"This is our first win in the World Cup and everyone enjoys this one," says Mohammad Nabi, the winning Afghanistan captain. "The pressure was great. The boys didnt' bat well, four five wickets early but Sami [Shenwari] played very well. Good learning experience about handling the pressure and for our upcoming games, it';s good as well. Putting two points on the board. Hope we win more games, everyone would have enjoyed this game. its out first win in the World Cup. We've had good support here and also back home"
"Particularly difficult for us," says Mommsen, "We knew what to expect. We knew if we were patient we can take a couple of wickets and get more. We had them seven down, but we couldn';t do it. Obviously we were trying to take wickets the whole time. Those 8, 9, 10, but unfortunately it wasn't to be."
Shenwari is Man of the Match "Thanks to Allah, thankful to stay there in the end and give the win for Afghanistan. We lost five wickets early and I had the resposibility to stay there till the end. Poor shot, but I was trying to get a six. Good win for us in the tournament and we are looking forward to win more and get into the Super Eight"
R.Guru Sankar: "85/2 --> 97/8 --> 211/9. What a ride! "
ali jan Rafique: "I am in public metro station and i want to shouting that Afghanistan have done it"
Chris: "Forget the full-member nations. Let's leave them out of the World Cup (they have the Champions Trophy anyway). Let's just have 16 Associate teams. Those guys always provide the most memorable highlights of the World Cups."
7.10 pm Two teams that have laid it all and then some more on the line. The Scottish have been so resilient. Alasdair Evans and Majid Haq needed to rewrite a domestic record for the ninth wicket and they bowled their skins out. It was a small total, they had to contend with Javed Ahmadi racing off at the top. And then came the double-strikes, a middle-overs collapse engineered by spectacularly disciplined bowling, full of belief and will. Richie Berrington is a dibbly-dobbly medium pacer but he bowled seriously well. Forced Afghanistan to 96 for 6 and Shenwari was wondering what he could do to stop it. He was consuming too many balls. He was not picking the gaps as he wanted. But then he buckled down. He told himself this was the World Cup. This is the occasion he had waited for so long and took control of the situation. Calculated blows, frantic running, pure unbreakable belief from him as well. And he won out, thanks to a little help from the phenomenal Shapoor Zadran

49.3
Wardlaw to Shapoor Zadran, FOUR, he's done it! Shapoor has the vicroty and races off to one corner of the ground in his trademark celebration. The Scots are heartbroken, Shenwari is delirously happy! He wanted a yorker, ends up with a low full toss on leg stump and it's been picked off. Shapoor had stopped running as soon as the ball beat the short fine leg fielder. Spread his hands out wide and fell onto the turn in joy! What a match! What a performance! What theatre! This is how good the World Cup can be! This is how good it should be!

Four of four! But only two fielders are outside the circle

49.2
Wardlaw to Shapoor Zadran, no run, slower ball ball on middle and leg, Shapoor nudges it into the leg side and sets off. There's no single there though and Machan bounds in and delivers an underarm throw, but it misses its mark! Whoooa, the tension is getting to me!! Time for a break for Shapoor as he gets some magic spray on his left hand

Mini conference between captain and bowler. Actually six in the circle

49.1
Wardlaw to Hamid Hassan, 1 run, curling yorker on off stump and it gets a thick outside edge to deep third man. Hamid did very well to protect his stumps. They're nailing their death overs discipline here, both teams

Six balls left, five runs needed for Afghanistan, one wicket for Scotland. This is the World Cup at it's best. Eight men up on in the ring!

End of over 49 (9 runs) Afghanistan 206/9 (5 runs required from 6 balls, RR: 4.20, RRR: 5.00)
    • Shapoor Zadran 8 (8b 1x4 0x6)
    • Hamid Hassan 14 (38b 1x4 0x6)

    • AC Evans 10-1-30-2
48.6
Berrington to Shapoor Zadran, FOUR, he's found the boundary at fine leg! This is why the extra ball matters and Shapoor got inside the line of the short slower ball and pulled it away very cheekily. Goes on a long, animated monologue with Hamid about the shot as they hug each other and contemplate....
48.6
Berrington to Shapoor Zadran, 1 wide, looks for the wide yorker, but Berrington has slid it wider than the tram lines allow. Pressure mounts, pressures shows
48.5
Berrington to Hamid Hassan, 1 leg bye, good length ball on middle and leg, looks for a flick but only lobs off the thigh pads towards point. And the keeper races after it himself. Brilliant commitment, but can't stop the single
48.4
Berrington to Hamid Hassan, no run, fuller and slower outside off, tapped into the covers. Dot ball, precious dot ball
48.3
Berrington to Shapoor Zadran, 1 run, and once it is pushed through point, up goes the roar and Afghanistan have their 200. They need 11 more but Scotland are in no mood to give them. What a match!

The ground has lost it's fervour now. It's all silent in Dunedin. Everyone is glued to the ball

48.2
Berrington to Hamid Hassan, 1 run, shortish and outside off, eased to deep third man for a single early in the over

Midwicket comes up, Mid-off is up. Scotland are fiddling with the field and taking their sweet time doing it. Slip is also in. They're slowing the game down, good job that

48.1
Berrington to Shapoor Zadran, 1 run, back of a length on middle, Shapoor goes right back in his crease and clips it to deep square leg and then has a chat with his partner

Afghanistan need 14 off 12 now! Scotland need only one wicket, and Berrington is searching for a five-for
Astavirs: "@Kiran - As House.M.D says, if you want fair, you picked the wrong species."
Sukrit Khatri: "Weirdly enough - winner and loser are the same in this match - Cricket. Can't digest that either of them might not play in 2019. "

Evans to Shapoor Zadran, 1 run, goes back and punches a back of a length delivery through point. Looked quite capable that time
47.5
Evans to Hamid Hassan, 1 run, back of a length on off stump, tapped into the point region and Hamid has to sent Shapoor back. Makes it in time before the direct hit from Berrington, but the ricochet allows the overthrow
47.5
Evans to Hamid Hassan, 1 wide, banged in short with a great big grunt from Evans and that means it's sailed too far over the head of the batsman. Wide called for height

17 off 14 now as Shenwari hugs his helmet

47.4
Evans to Shapoor Zadran, 1 run, full on leg stump, Shapoor moves across and clips it through midwicket and gives the strike to the better batsman

Kiran: "Life is so unfair. There is no body who deservs a 100 more than Shenwari. Anyway, I hope he retains the tape of the game so that his grand kids know the legend of their grandfather. "

47.3
Evans to Shapoor Zadran, no run, sliding down leg and they go up in unison for an appeal. Umpire shakes his head and Mommsen goes for a review. Is this it? Nope, impact was off the thigh pad before Cross dived to his right and pouched a great take

Point goes back, Evans is bowling around and has two slips

47.2
Evans to Shapoor Zadran, no run, shortish and outside off, Shapoor flails and misses. Shenwari can't watch
47.1
Evans to Hamid Hassan, 1 run, back of a length and outside off, slid down to third man. Lots of those and the odd boundary is what's needed

The equation reduces to 19 off 18, Scotland need one more wicket. Both teams on the cusp of their maiden World Cup win. Time for Evans to step up again. 9-1-25-2. Mommsen has a slip, a deep point, a mid-off. a point and a cover
Rajendra: "What a fight back .. spell bound"
Salman: "Samiullah Shenwari could be second Misbah-ul-Haq, based on his average and of course for leaving right after bringing the match closer :-)" And missing centuries
Cameron: "Remember Shapoor smashed an unbeaten 40-odd in an exhibition match a year or two back? Afghanistan aren't out yet"

End of over 47 (19 runs) Afghanistan 192/9 (19 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 4.08, RRR: 6.33)

    • I Wardlaw 9-0-56-0
46.6
Haq to Shapoor Zadran, no run, tossed up on middle and Shapoor blocks

All is not lost for Afghanistan, even if Shenwari has his helmet in his hands in the dug out. What can Shapoor Zadran do? Can Scotland make their play here? Slip in place
Raja: "Don't worry Afghanistan. Hassan will rescue you. 19 off 18 is doable."

chinmay: "This is the innings of the World Cup so far.. Better than Southee's 7 or McCullum's 77 or Jayawardene's 100 or even Wilson's knock yesterday.. I bow down to thee!!!!"

46.5
Haq to Samiullah Shenwari, OUT, length ball on middle and Shenwari has picked out deep midwicket! Haq goes mad, Shenwari is on his knees in despair! What an innings! What a performance! What passion! And spare a thought for Davey on the boundary, who kept calm and pouched a good, pressure catch. But wait... the third umpire is asking him to wait. He's checking if Scotland have adhered to the field restrictions. You're allowed four outside the circle. How many did Scotland have? They had the right people and Shenwari has to walk and he does so while counting the men on the deep in his mind

Haq to Samiullah Shenwari, SIX, flighted into the slot and Shenwari has launched it over the square leg boundary and sinks onto his knees again. He's 96 not out and he's got every scenario rolling in his head. Will hte pressure be too much? Its only 19 off 20
46.3
Haq to Samiullah Shenwari, no run, fired into the block hole and its been blocked

46.2

46.1
Haq to Samiullah Shenwari, SIX, it's flat and it sits up for a magnificent mow over cow corner. Shenwari has skipped down the track and is playing the innings of his life

Afghanistan need 38 off 28, Shenwari and Hamid have brought it so close.. Mommsen looks around to see who he wants with the ball. Decides on Haq to continue, around the wicket
Noman Yousuf: "Missing Bill Lawry here.. "What a match. what a match... This one is going down the wire... What a spirited performance from both these sides... This one is a ripper..'"

Bangladesh’s giant slaying 2007 feat

Bangladesh’s giant slaying 2007 feat
Bangladesh stunned India by five wickets in the group stages in 2007. The bowlers first restricted India's formidable batsmen to a mere 191 all out in 49.3 overs, before three of the batsmen hit half-centuries to overhaul the target in 48.3 overs.

Greatest CWC Moment - 5 Days to Go

Background

Bangladesh had secured two wins in its warm-up matches, beating Scotland and also overcoming New Zealand, and was quietly confident. India had gone one better in the warm-ups, with comprehensive wins over the Netherlands and the West Indies in which both batsmen and bowlers came good.

India had amongst the most pedigreed batting line-ups in the competition, and was thought of as a potential semi-finalist at least. In what was the first game of the 2007 World Cup for both teams, Rahul Dravid won the toss and chose to bat first.

The Moment

It would soon become apparent that the toss was the only thing that would go in India’s favour. Pacer Mashrafe Mortaza led the way, dismissing Virender Sehwag (2) and Robin Uthappa (9) inside the first seven overs. Both Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar were stifled, adding only 19 runs in 8.2 overs, and from then India was on the back foot.

The spin duo of Abdur Razzak and Mohammad Rafique then broke open the middle order, accounting for Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, Ganguly and MS Dhoni between them. All the while, run-scoring had been choked, so even as wickets fell, India’s position continued to weaken.

A final-wicket stand of 32 between Munaf Patel and Zaheer Khan pushed the total to 191, before Mortaza ended things with his fourth wicket.

Mortaza took 4 for 38, Razzak finished with 3 for 38 and Rafique claimed 3 for 35. Just like the bowlers had done, a troika of batsmen then ensured the second half of the game would also go Bangladesh’s way.
"It was a good toss to lose. When I saw the wicket, it looked a good batting track but our new bowlers did very well. Then our spinners did a fantastic job. There wasn't a lot of turn but they put the ball in the right place."
Habibul Bashar, the Bangladesh captain.

Tamim Iqbal only 17 years and five ODIs old at the time, gave his side a blistering start with a robust 53-ball 51 that included two sixes and seven fours. Shakib Al Hasan, also a young up-and-coming allrounder of 19, made a composed 53 off 86 while Mushfiqur Rahim, also a teenager then, clocking in at 18-years-old, stayed till the end with 56 not out off 107 balls.

Mushfiqur and Shakib came together with the score a tricky 79 for 3 in 16 overs, but both batted with a maturity that belied their years. An 84-run stand followed which brought Bangladesh to the doorstep of victory, before Mushfiqur sealed it in the penultimate over. All three teenagers were on World Cup debut, making the performance even more noteworthy.

"Yes! Hands in the air! It's gone through. What an innings. What a day for Bangladeshi cricket. Is it their biggest moment yet? Only time will tell. But it is certainly a wonderful way to start their World Cup campaign."
Ian Bishop commentating on air during the match.

What happened next?

Defeat for India eventually heralded its exit from the first round, an ignominy it hadn’t suffered since 1979. Bangladesh, with wins against India and Bermuda, qualified for the Super Eights and went on to beat another Test playing nation, winning against South Africa although they did lose to Ireland in a match that was slated to be India v Pakistan.

Although it couldn’t progress beyond that stage, Bangladesh had won the hearts of all cricket fans with its incredible and unexpected performance in the group stages.

Big wins for New Zealand, Zimbabwe in warm-ups

Big wins for New Zealand, Zimbabwe in warm-ups

Boult grabs five-for after strong batting performance; Masakadza ton hands Sri Lanka seven-wicket loss

A strong, all-round performance helped New Zealand defeat South Africa by 134 runs in its World Cup warm-up match at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Wednesday (February 11).

After opting to bat first, New Zealand's batsmen made merry, racing to 331 for 8 in 50 overs, powered by half-centuries from Brendon McCullum (59 off 45) and Kane Williamson (66 off 53). All the batsmen, barring Luke Ronchi (19) and Tim Southee (1 not out), scored above 20, and there were three partnerships in excess of 50. Trent Boult then ran through South Africa's batting line-up and ended with 5 for 51 to bowl it out for 197 in 44.2 overs.
In another warm-up match, a spirited Zimbabwe, led by an unbeaten century from Hamilton Masakadza and an all-round display from Sean Williams, got the better of Sri Lanka at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln. Sri Lanka posted 279 for 8 from its 50 overs, courtesy half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne (58) and Jeevan Mendis (51). Masakadza (117), Brendan Taylor (63) and Williams (51) then made light work of the target, winning with seven wickets in hand and 28 balls to spare.

The result meant that Sri Lanka have now lost both its warm-up matches before the marquee tournament.

McCullum started aggressively alongside Martin Guptill but after the fielding restrictions were lifted, Guptill (26) edged Wayne Parnell to the wicketkeeper. That hardly deterred McCullum. The New Zealand captain was joined by the in-form Williamson and the pair scored at more than eight runs an over, taking their side past 125 in the 19th over. Aaron Phangiso gave South Africa the much needed breakthrough, bowling McCullum and ending the 70-run partnership, but Williamson and Ross Taylor continued the good work with a 53-run stand for the third wicket.

Vernon Philander dismissed Williamson after his half-century and Taylor fell nine runs short of his, but Grant Elliott (24) and Corey Anderson (21) kept New Zealand going. Daniel Vettori (27) and Nathan McCullum (33 off 19) then added 46 from the last five overs to power the side past 300.

South Africa's chase never got going and it was reduced to 62 for 6 in the 14th over, with Boult and Vettori
picking up five between them. However, JP Duminy and Vernon Philander looked comfortable during their 121-run stand for the seventh wicket, both hitting half-centuries. After Duminy was bowled by Boult for 80 in the 41st over, New Zealand wrapped up the innings. Only two South Africa batsmen, apart from Philander (57) and Duminy, got to double-digit scores.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe got off to a poor start in its chase, losing openers Chamu Chibhabha and Sikandar Raza within the first seven overs. Masakadza and captain Taylor kept the side going with a steady partnership. Angelo Mathews rotated his bowlers but to no avail. Both batsmen hit half-centuries and kept the run rate around six, taking Zimbabwe past 160 in 27 overs.

Tillakaratne Dilshan finally ended the 127-run partnership with the wicket of Taylor, but Williams ensured that the good work didn't go to waste. With 118 runs needed from 22 overs, Williams and Masakadza upped the ante. Masakadza went past his century and remained undefeated on 117, a knock studded with eight fours and three sixes, while Williams' 46-ball 51 included six fours. Suranga Lakmal conceded 56 runs from his seven overs while 46 runs came from Lasith Malinga's seven wicketless overs..

Earlier, Sri Lanka opted to bat and opened with Kumar Sangakkara in place of Tillakaratne Dilshan, but the left-hander fell for just 8 to Tinashe Panyangara in the third over. Lahiru Thirimanne and Mahela Jayawardene consolidated with a 62-run stand for the second wicket but both fell for 30 in quick succession, reducing Sri Lanka to 85 for 3 in the 16th over.

The twin strikes led to a slight dip in the run rate but the pair revived Sri Lanka's innings with 64-run partnership before Utseya dismissed Chandimal for a 46-ball 29. Karunaratne fell for 58 and Sean Williams' left-arm spin accounted for Thisara Perera (17) and Nuwan Kulasekara (9), but Jeevan Mendis gave the innings a much-needed boost. He stroked four boundaries on his way to a run-a-ball 51 and took Sri Lanka to 260 before he became Williams' third victim in the 48th over. Sachitra Senanayake (25 off 17) then struck a couple of sixes to take Sri Lanka to 279.

BANGLADESH ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP 2015 TOURNAMENT PREVIEW & GUIDE

BANGLADESH ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP 2015 TOURNAMENT PREVIEW & GUIDE

Confident after the clean sweep against Zimbabwe at home, Bangladesh will be the team to watch out for in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 provides a great opportunity for Bangladesh to make strides in its performance in Australia and New Zealand. Bangladesh has played 12 One-Day Internationals combined in both countries, without tasting victory so far. The fact that its yet to win a match in any of the host nations could work in Bangladesh’s favour though, with players hungrier than ever to register a first win.

Led by Mashrafe Mortaza, a veteran of 144 ODIs who has a wealth of experience spanning over 13 years in international cricket, Bangladesh also boasts of a very experienced think-tank in Shakib-al-Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamin Iqbal, all of whom have played well over a hundred ODIs.

"Some are anxious but I feel it is possible for Bangladesh to do well in those conditions. I think we may see a couple of Bangladeshi batsmen among the top five batsmen at this World Cup. We are preparing for it, now we are bracing to implement it in the matches. Our target will be to do something special."
Mushfiqur Rahim - Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper-batsman

Bangladesh is currently ranked No. 9 in the Reliance ICC ODI Team rankings but they will be looking to go at least one place better and qualify for the quarter-final stages down under.

Past World Cup performances

Bangladesh started its World Cup journey in 1999 against New Zealand at the County Ground in Chelmsford, in England. It didn’t have to wait too long for first World Cup win as it defeated Scotland in its third match of the tournament by 22 runs. However, it caused the biggest upset of the 1999 edition when it defeated Pakistan by 62 runs in Northampton.

Bangladesh had to wait for a while before its next World Cup win, going win-less in 2003, but when victory did arrive, it was nothing short of a dream start to its 2007 campaign. Bangladesh put it across India in what was the first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 for both sides, winning by five wickets to earn a passage to the Super Eights stage. That remains the only occasion Bangladesh moved past the first round of a World Cup.

Bangladesh was a dark horse for making it to the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Cup too, but although it registered wins against Ireland and the Netherlands, and beat a third Test playing nation at a World Cup by clinching a thriller against England, the team narrowly missed out on progressing beyond the first round.

Pool: Bangladesh is in Pool A, with New Zealand, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Scotland and Afghanistan.

Captain: Mashrafe Mortaza

Coach: Chandika Hathurusinghe

Preview

One of the factors that could work well for Bangladesh is its unpredictability. On his day Shakib-al-Hasan can turn a match on its head with either bat or ball. Bangladesh will also bank on Tamim Iqbal for a brisk start, and will hope the likes of Mominul Haque, Tamim, and Mushfiqur Rahim can build the innings. If the batsmen fire, the bowling is more than capable of running through sides on its day.

The Bangladesh batting is going to revolve around Rahim, who has been in good touch in 2014, scoring 704 runs at an impressive average of 44.00 and also has a century to his name, which came against India in the Asia Cup. Both Shakib and Mashrafe Mortaza are going to be vital cogs in Bangladesh’s wheel to get wins in the tournament. Shakib was Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in ODIs in 2014 with 21 victims, while Mortaza was second with 18 sticks from 13 matches.

Strengths: That the selectors have relieved Rahim from his captaincy duties could work in its favour, allowing him to focus on his batting. The diminutive wicketkeeper-batsman is a classy bat with strokes all around the wicket, and can pack a punch when required too.

Shakib, the top ranked all-rounder in ODIs, will be a vital contributor. As for Bangladesh’s bowling, the talented young Taskin Ahmed started his career with impressive performances against India at home, while Taijul Islam, the left-arm spinner, recently became the first bowler to claim a hat-trick on ODI debut.

Recent form

Bangladesh began 2014 searching for a win for the longest time, but as its recent 5-0 rout of Zimbabwe at home shows, the signs were there of the side coming together well. It played 18 ODIs in 2014, winning five, losing 12 and with one match against India in Dhaka abandoned due to rain.

Star Player: Shakib-al-Hasan

A left-hand batsman and left-arm spinner, Shakib will be playing his third World Cup. He has been the team’s mainstay in both batting and bowling, and is ranked as the ICC’s top all-rounder with good reason. If Bangladesh are to progress, the man who will have to provide the star turn will be Shakib. Besides, he is the only one to have experienced Australian conditions recently, having participated in the Big Bash League Twenty20 tournament. In the last 12 matches he has scored 289 runs, including a century, but more importantly he as picked up 21 wickets at an impressive average of 16.80.

One to watch out for: Tajiul Islam

Left-arm spinner Tajiul Islam made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in Mirpul on December 2014. The 22-year-old shot to fame in his very first match, becoming the first bowler to claim a hat-trick on ODI debut. He played a key role in cleaning up the tail, ending with figures of 4 for 11 in a match that Bangladesh won by five wickets. He was also adjudged the Man of the Match.

Fun facts:

Tamim Iqbal - In 2011 he was named as one of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack four Cricketers of the Year.
Anamul Haque – He was the leading run scorer at the 2012 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Shakib Al Hasan - The first player ever to top the ICC all-rounder ranking in all 3 formats at the same time.
Mushfiqur Rahim – He made his international debut when he was just 16 years old.

Key match: Afghanistan v Bangladesh, February 18, Manuka Oval

Bangladesh will start its campaign against Afghanistan at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. Both teams have played each other just once in an ODI, where Afghanistan emerged victorious by 32 runs at Fatullah during the Asia Cup in 2014.

Bangladesh will want to not only avenge that loss, but also being its campaign on a winning note. Up against strong teams, every win and all points on offer are precious, and victory against Afghanistan will also put the side on firmer footing before taking on the likes of Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

“Three wins give you a chance, but if we win four games, we will probably make sure that we qualify for the quarterfinals. I think the Brisbane stint as well as four matches over there will give us a good indication about where we are.” - Chandika Hathurusinghe, the Bangladesh coach.

“Obviously we want to go to the second round. But it’s a tough job. We really need a good start in the tournament. If we can start well, we will be confident against every other side.” - Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh captain.

“We can definitely cause an upset and get to that quarterfinal stage, that's our big goal. But to guarantee that we have to upset two big teams. We also have to make sure we beat Scotland and Afghanistan, who we can't take lightly. It's a big ask and it will be tough to beat Australia and New Zealand in their home conditions. But we've got players, and if they perform on a certain day, they can be match winners.” Heath Streak, the Bangladesh bowling coach.

Scott Styris’s Prediction: Bangladesh: Group Stage

Predicting where Bangladesh will finish is relatively easy based solely on where the tournament is played. In the subcontinent they're a force and a certainty to knock over a top 8 opponent. Down in the southern hemisphere they will struggle with the extra bounce and lack of spin. This tournament will teams will rely on their pace bowlers and with a dearth of quality options I think they will be chasing big scores more often than not.

Squad: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan (vice-capt), Mahmudullah Riaz, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Nasir Hossain, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Al-Amin Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman, Arafat Sunny.

Clarke returns as friendly practice matches begin

Clarke returns as friendly practice matches begin

Australia World Cup Captain Michael Clarke returned to action today as he continues his recovery from injury, in one of several friendly practice matches that took place yesterday and today across Australia and New Zealand

Australia skipper Michael Clarke made a successful return from injury in Brisbane today, but the news was not as good for Bangladesh which failed to topple a Cricket Australia XI.

Clarke, who is in a race against time to return from hamstring surgery to head up Australia’s ICC Cricket World Cup campaign, scored 34 runs off 36 balls in the warm-up match at Allan Border Field while also bowling two overs and taking a great grab in slips.

Batting first, Bangladesh was in trouble early after losing star Shakib Al Hasan, who was caught by Clarke in slips.

It fell to 5-57 before a partnership between Mohammad Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman helped them post a decent total of 193.

The CA XI chased the total with eight overs in hand for the loss of six wickets.

The leg-spin of Rahman ended Clarke’s innings, while Al-Amin Hossain, Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar also picked up wickets.

In Sydney, Scotland was in action in a practice match against St George DCC.

Fielding a team without captain Preston Mommsen and led by vice-captain Kyle Coetzer, Scotland won the toss and opted to bowl, with St George scoring 9-189 off its 50 overs.

Scotland’s batsmen had a good hit-out in reply. After losing Coetzer for 23, Calum Macleod took control scoring an unbeaten 129 to lead Scotland to an eight-wicket victory.

Macleod reached his century with 12 fours and five sixes, well supported by Freddie Coleman who finished unbeaten on 39.

Meanwhile in Napier, United Arab Emirates notched a six-wicket win over Central Districts after successfully chasing 250 and in New Zealand yesterday, Zimbabwe was in action against Northern Districts in Gisborne, posting an eight-wicket win.

Batting first, Gisborne scored 6-266, with the wickets shared between the Zimbabwe bowlers. Tinashe Panyangara was particularly economical with his four overs taking 1-14.

Zimbabwe reached the total off 40.4 overs thanks to the batting efforts of Brendan Taylor (87* off 72), Sikandar Butt (63 off 64), Chamu Chibhabha (62 off 70) and Hamilton Masakadza (41* off 41).
